Today Bob and I decide to drive down to Palmer for groceries and to check out the Elk's Lodge, our intended next camping site.
Our first stop is the Visitor Center, to check out the area and get all the
not-to-be-missed items on our
to-do list.
Located in the Mat-su Valley, this is one of the locations the US government allowed farmers (back in the 1970's), preferably between ages 25 and 35 to homestead 40 acres if they agreed to farm for a minimum of 5 years. This valley is one of the few areas in the state that can support crops and is known for super-sized veggies due to the long daylight hours in the summer. Of course early July is way to soon for these super-sized crops, but the flowers are sure nice!
The lake at the Elks Lodge proves to be a winner, and we make reservations for a week, beginning on Wednesday July 6th. Groceries in hand, it's time to return to Talkeetna.
