If you enjoy narrow mountain ringed bays with wildlife and a glacier or two for your viewing pleasure, you will most likely be thrilled to be in Seward - we most certainly are.
The City of Seward has RV parks all along the water-front, and we have a second row view by choice. This way we have 50amps and can use our clothes dryer. It's nice to have a warm towel when you get out of the shower.
The piling you see sticking above the sand on the beach are all that remain of the old pier, destroyed in the 1964 earthquake that leveled so many places in Alaska. Many towns, including Seward, had to be relocated. Locals know it will happen again, then just don't know when.
As you can see, having a second row place is not to our detriment. We are surrounded by gorgeous scenery, and for the most part, can easily see over the first row. We can watch all the boats sail into and out of the harbor.
This monument is for the trains which were originally used for gold, now mostly used for tourism and coal.
Nash road goes around the harbor to the east side. It doesn't go far, but allows us to see the west shore where we are parked and take in the view across the harbor. We also see these dry-docked and seemingly forgotten vessels.
There are a few buildings on the east side, all with much character!
Now back on the west side, we take the road to the end, and find more buildings with character, but in much better shape.
Now on our way back to "home," I can hardly believe my eyes. The Radiance of the Seas is about to leave port. We have seen this ship on the Travel channel, and realize this is as close as we will ever get to a ship of this magnitude. Bob drives over to the dock so we can get some up close pictures, and then back to the Popeye Express where we can watch her turn around. Pretty awesome!
The little tug you see above next to her is an escort, probably an excuse for the city of Seward to charge a big fee to guide her in and out of port. With engines that turn 360 degrees, Radiance of the Seas is totally self propelled and the Captain uses a small joy stick - ah, technology!
A final look at our parking spot and a few pictures of the bay. This is a very special place.
Tomorrow we plan to hike up to Exit Glacier and to Lowell Point.
