Creamer's Field, once a dairy farm, is a migratory waterfowl refuge. This picture shows the latest arrivals, Sandhill Cranes, who use the Tanana Valley as a flyway.
In addition to birds, there are many flowers, including these wild Iris.
Inside the visitor center we met a nice couple, volunteers, who drove their RV up for the summer, and gave us many good suggestions for places to stay along our route. Really sorry I didn't get their names. Too much fun stuff to see and do!
We arrived in time for a guided tour through the
boreal forest trail. Although we could hear the many interesting song birds in this part of the field, none poked their heads out for a shot.
Both trails are self guided. We arrived minutes prior to a guided tour. Art Kennedy, our guide, also volunteers and we are fortunate to have such a knowledgeable birder to assist us with our stupid questions!
Here I find one of Alaska's many wild Prickly Rose bushes.
At the end of our tour, Art is gracious enough to pose with Bob.
To help keep birds away from Fairbanks International Airport, tons of barley are spread on the fields each year to ensure the safety of the planes, passengers, and birds. Apparently this technique works!
