Talkeetna Ranger Station

From Talkeetna Ranger Station
Undeniably the most beautiful building in town, the Talkeetna Ranger Station is a must stop for climbers prior to going to the 7,000' base camp on Denali mountain. This station features a film on the rigors of climbing Denali, the highest mountain in north America at 20,320'.

Measured from Wonder Lake, it has a vertical rise of over 18,000', higher than Mt. Everest. Winter lows at 14,500' can plummet to -95 degrees f. and winds can gust to over 150 mph. Beginners need not apply!

Talkeetna is used as the hub to shuttle both climbers and supplies to the base camp. Scenic flights are also offered out of the airport.

There is an interesting display of hoof and paw castings, made of some type of polymer or rubbery material. Pictures were hard to take due to contrast, but I think you will get the idea.

Talkeetna doesn't have a lot of moose or caribou in the area, but is infamous for it's black and grizzly bears. Remember everyone, yell "Hey bear" when walking in the woods!

From Walking Talkeetna
Hey we've arrived for our next adventure - an entire week to enjoy Talkeetna and surroundings. On our walking tour, we take several pictures of the town. I think we've covered every building. Beautiful downtown Talkeetna is about 2 blocks long. Have fun!

Trip to Wonder Lake & Back

From Trip to Wonder Lake, DNP
Today is a liquid sunshine day, but the caribou along the river don't seem to care. This was taken at mile 15, just as the pavement ends and the rest is a well maintained dirt road.

Dall Sheep seem to be everywhere today. They are so cute! This guy is busy chewing his cud on Marmot Rock, very close to the road to get this good close up - finally!

I ask Bob to spoof it up at the Toklat River rest stop.

Finally at mile 85 is Wonder Lake, known for spectacular views complete with reflections of the Alaskan Range including Denali. Today, we get clouds, and I might add, swarms of mosquitos to boot. But, I came prepared. That's the way it goes in Alaska! Maybe we'll have better luck during the week we'll be in Talkeetna.

Hey, we find another bear, this time a profile view. Yea!

Count them: not one, but two bull moose. Are we in luck or what?

The rain hid the mountains, but it seems to have brought on the animals. How fortunate since today is our final day in the park. The mud does make viewing challenging. Each time we stop, passengers pull out window cleaners and try to get the mud the tires continually throw onto the windows cleaned up for better viewing. It's almost a lost cause.

In spite of the rain and mud, everyone is in a cheerful mood and has a good time. We loved our visit, but now it's time for our next adventure.

Off to the Eielson Visitor Center

From Beyond to the Eielson Visitor Center
After about a 30 minute wait for a west bound bus to arrive, we climb aboard and enjoy the scenery out to the Eielson Visitor Center, located at mile 66 along the park road. Our tickets for the discovery walk included bus fare to this point.

At the point where the bus picked us up, we were only a short drive to the Toklat River Contact station which offers rest rooms and an Alaska Geographic Bookstore. After a stop of around 10 minutes, we resumed the drive west.

Although not high elevation wise, we are well above the tree line. In this extreme cold climate, trees only grow to about the 3,000' elevation, if I recall, perhaps even less.

The last photo above, if you look in the lower 25% of the picture and on the left side, the light colored blob is actually a grizzly bear. I used this photo as it was the only one where you can actually see his ears sticking up. Even with a heavy duty telephoto lens, the animals are too far away to get a very good shot. Of course they all seem to be showing us their rear ends!

Among the many displays are these beautiful quilts. This area features awesome views of Denali - when the weather is clear. Today, although the weather continues to improve, doesn't look promising.

Finally, a close-up of wildlife; wouldn't you know it would be the miniature kind!

Our bus driver strikes a pose with me. He's been driving these buses in DNP for 25 years!

But then . . . there poking out of the clouds, the south (L) and north (R) peaks of Mt. McKinley (or Denali) show themselves for the first time in days. We are almost back to the park entrance and it is after 9:00 PM. We are thrilled and look forward to going out to Wonder Lake, which reported has spectacular views, tomorrow. We left the coach at 7:30 this morning. It's been a long day.
