Frankenmuth is reportedly the most visited town in Michigan. Think of Solvang, CA or Leavenworth, WA and you'll have an idea of what Frankenmuth is like.
Largely settled by German immigrants, eventually it succumbed to tourism, and indeed, many tourists refer to it as "Chicken City."
Neighbors in the campground sent us to Zehnders, famous for their home style chicken dinners. There is no one in the kitchen washing and peeling potatoes - the mashed variety come straight out of a box; so much for home style. As to the friend chicken, which we did not have, I heard the waitress say they used crushed saltines. Has anyone recently read the list of ingredients on a box of saltines? All drug store food.
The roast chicken, which we did have, was a huge disappointment. Any Costco chicken is superior. As I mentioned in an earlier blog: when in the Midwest, skip the food and go straight to the shopping, if you feel the need. We didn't take our own advice - did we!
Walking the few short blocks of this pretty town, we find this great old wooden bridge over the Cass River. It is interesting to note the warning sign regarding the weight limits for the bridge. What aren't they telling us? Popeye weighs over 20 tons; and no, we did not take Popeye into town.
We walk all the way past the railroad tracks and back to the parking lot at the restaurant, right across from the bridge and take these pictures.
During our walk, we noticed a really great looking brewery, with people enjoying fresh salads and good looking entrees. So today, Saturday, we decide to go back into town for lunch at the brewery. Our food was great as were the suds, and Bob, as usual, finds a pretty waitress to pose for a picture.
I take a picture of this river boat on the balcony of the brewery which overlooks the Cass River.
Now full, our next stop is Bronner's, the largest Christmas Store in the world.
